Celtic Raku 2026

Raku is a wonderful and exciting way to fire ceramics outdoors that gives unique and beautiful glaze affects, from deep turquoises, iridescent greens and blues, beautiful crackle whites, to rich coppers and warm organic tones. This is a six day course.

"What an absolutely wonderful raku/holiday experience in a fantastic location with knowledgeable, helpful and encouraging hosts – the most delicious homecooked food it’s a five star review from me "
"I loved the physical raku firing process and the effects it has on the glaze which are only revealed as you clean them. It really brought the things I had made to life and I took home beautiful objects. I hope to visit again "

Raku is a wonderful and exciting way to fire ceramics outdoors that gives unique and beautiful glaze affects, from deep turquoises, iridescent greens and blues, beautiful crackle whites, to rich coppers and warm organic tones. Raku is an ancient Japanese technique and the word itself translates as ‘enjoyment’ . Join us on this course where Celtic and Japanese influences are blended to create a unique and creative experience.

A variety of hand building techniques such as coiling, pinch pots, slab building, model making, tile, plaque making and burnishing will be taught, to enable you to make, decorate and glaze your own raku pieces. There will also be an introduction to Celtic art, pattern and culture as we hope that this, alongside the beauty of the surrounding landscape can be a rich seam of inspiration. All levels of experience with ceramics are very welcome.

We aim to create a relaxed, friendly, creative and supportive environment where time for individual tuition is built in to give each person the confidence to bring their own ideas into their ceramic work. The course capacity is for 4 to 6 people.

There are also additional optional activities for this course: guided walks, a mindfulness with clay workshop and drawing from nature. Raku is intrinsically linked to Japanese tea ceremony bowls, and you are also invited to a special Raku Celtic and Japanese Tea Ceremony created by Ursula and Sonja.

The course price includes all activities materials, firing costs. A home cooked vegetarian lunch daily, teas/coffee/biscuits/cake provided and is also included in the cost. Please inform us of any dietary requirements you may have.

Although accommodation is not included, we can recommend local B&Bs and campsites if required.
