Mandala Ceramics 2026

A six day course inspired by the Mandala pattern where we will explore this universal symbol through the nature around us, short talks/lectures and the medium of clay.

"The Mandala Course offered a unique blend of creative exploration and practical learning, immersing participants in hands on activities that deepened their understanding of both art and technique. The supportive environment encouraged experimentation, fostering both confidence and camaraderie among the group."

The Mandala is a universal pattern that is reflected in nature, such as in a flower, a crystal, a snowflake, and can also be found in art throughout the world - from intricate sand paintings made by Tibetan monks to the Rose-stained glass windows within Gothic cathedrals and churches and the beautiful environmental sculpture of Andy Goldsworthy.

The mandala pattern will be the inspiration for this course, and we will explore this symbol through the nature around us, short talks/lectures and through the medium of clay.

A variety of hand building techniques such as coiling, pinch pots, slab building, model making, tile, plaque making will be taught, to enable you to make, decorate and glaze your own unique mandala clay pieces.
The skill of centering the clay on the potter’s wheel directly relates to the mandala symbol, where the centre of the pattern is fundamental, and so there will also be an opportunity to have a go on the potter’s wheel.
There are also additional optional activities for this course: mandala sand drawing on the beach, guided walks, a mindfulness with clay workshop, drawing mandalas from nature, painting mandala patterns on pebbles and circular boxes.

All levels of experience with ceramics are very welcome. We aim to create a relaxed, friendly, creative and supportive environment where time for individual tuition is built in to give each person the confidence to bring their own ideas into their ceramic work. The course capacity is for 6-8 people.
