"The Raku pottery course was a delight. I was a complete beginner but booked the course wanting to expand my range of creative expression. The environment that Ursula and Sonja set up was conducive to learning the techniques but also to exploring, playing and trusting the process."

Dates and times are flexible and can be arranged to suit you.
Raku is a wonderful and exciting way to fire ceramics outdoors that gives unique and beautiful glaze affects, from deep turquoises, iridescent greens and blues, beautiful crackle whites, to rich coppers and warm organic tones. Raku is an ancient Japanese technique and the word itself translates as ‘enjoyment’.
These short courses are designed for individuals or small groups (including families) who would like to have a go at Raku but may not have the time for the 6-day course we offer.
A variety of hand building techniques such as coiling, pinch pots, slab building, model making, tile, plaque making and burnishing will be taught, to enable you to make, decorate and glaze your own raku pieces. You will be guided through the process of firing the pieces and, if you would like to, you can have a go at taking your pieces from the kiln. Children must be accompanied by an adult and due to health and safety reasons will be unable to take their pieces out of the raku kiln but are able to watch this process from a safe distance and can join in the fun of scrubbing their ceramic pieces to reveal the beautiful glazes. All levels of experience with ceramics are very welcome.
We aim to create a relaxed, friendly, creative and supportive environment where time for individual tuition is built in to give each person the confidence to bring their own ideas into their ceramic work. The course capacity is for up to 1-4 people.
The courses are designed in 3 separate sessions to allow time for the ceramic pieces to dry and be biscuit fired prior to the raku.
